Prenatal Care
Did you know that routine chiropractic care throughout pregnancy can help mom and baby be healthier as well as shorten labor time and pain? Yes, research has shown all this to be true! This is why Dr. Kayla chooses to specialize in prenatal care.
At conception, mom’s body releases a hormone called “relaxin”. This hormone loosens all of mom’s joints, ligaments and muscles to accommodate the precious new life growing inside of her. Also, throughout the pregnancy moms weight and center or gravity will drastically change. These are just some of the reasons why chiropractic care is so important during this time. Mom needs to ensure that everything is in the right position to allow maximum room for baby to move and position him or herself correctly. After all, movement is life. Movement helps baby’s brain development and baby’s position not only affects moms comfort but also her labor and delivery.
Dr. Kayla has taken numerous post graduate hours of specialty training in prenatal care therefore, a gentle, specific and safe adjusting approach will be utilized. She will also be happy to help you navigate your network of birth providers and/or help assist you in designing your birth plan.
Dr. Kayla is also certified in the Webster’s Technique. The Webster’s technique is the analysis and correction of sacral misalignments to facilitate pelvic alignment in mom and restore proper nervous system function. This in turn balances mom’s pelvic muscles and ligaments reducing uterine constraint and allowing baby optimal room for movement and positioning.
The prenatal period is such an exciting time in your life and we want to help you make it a wonderful, healthy experience!
Infants and chiropractic care
Misalignments in an infant’s spine can occur in utero or from the birthing process. Even the gentlest of births can be traumatic to an infant’s spine especially if baby’s positioning is off at all or if drugs are used to strengthen contractions. Intervention such as forceps, vacuum extraction and cesarean sections cause added pressure to an infant’s spine which can cause vertebral misalignments. If a misalignment is present the joint does not move properly. Research and literature shows that movement/motion feeds the brain therefore, a joint that is not moving properly as an infant grows can not only affect spinal/ structural development but also brain development. Chiropractic adjustments to an infant are extremely gentle, safe and specific.
It is routine that shortly after our babies are born we have their height and weight checked, their temperature taken and reflexes checked.
Our nervous system controls each of these functions so it only makes since that we should have our babies nervous system checked shortly after birth by a specialized chiropractor for a wellness exam at the start of life.
As infants grow, they learn to lift their head, roll over, sit up, crawl and walk. These are all activities that can cause spinal misalignments so in addition to a wellness exam at the start of life we recommend parents have their babies checked routinely throughout their first year of life by a pediatric chiropractor.
Chiropractic commonly helps infants with:
Colic
Reflux
Ear infections
Constipation
Sleeping problems
Cranial malformations
Nursing/feeding challenges
Pediatrics and Chiropractic Care
As children grow, they will experience minor injuries that can affect their spinal, and overall, health as well as their posture. These include learning to ride a bike, playground injuries, backpack repetitive traumas and sports like soccer, football, gymnastics, etc.
World renowned pediatric chiropractor Dr. Jeanne Ohm states it perfectly “It is important to understand that the Doctor of Chiropractic does not treat conditions or diseases. The expertise of the chiropractor is in checking the child’s spine for misalignments that impair nervous system function therefore affecting overall body function. The bones of the spine, the vertebrae, house and protect the spinal cord. The spinal cord is an extension of the brain and carries information from the brain to the body parts and back to the brain again. Subluxations (misalignments) interfere with the nerves’ ability to transmit this vital information.”
The popular saying is true “It is easier to build a healthy child than repair a broken adult”.
Chiropractic commonly helps children with:

Autism
